  • HIV/AIDS and other disease treatment and outcome interests (especially chronic disease) and the behavioral/mental-health aspects associated with these.
  • Mining large medical record databases for work in clinical translation.

Dr. Li has been awarded more than $35 million in NIH-funded translational research (including multiple R01 awards) over his career.

His prior teaching and research experience includes appointments as Director of the Prevention Research Center and a Professor of Pediatrics Wayne State University, Detroit, since 2003; Professor, Department of Pediatrics, West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine, Morgantown, West Virginia, 1999-2003; Adjunct Professor, Department of Community Medicine, WVU School of Medicine, Morgantown, 2000-2003; Adjunct Professor, Division of Family and Consumer Sciences, WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer, Morgantown, 2002-2003; Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, 1992-1998; Associate Graduate Faculty, University of Maryland Graduate School, Baltimore,1993-1999; Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, 1998-1999. 

Author of more than 300 journal articles,  he is a globally recognized mental health expert in behavioral and interventional translational research focused on improved clinical treatment regimes/outcomes for HIV/AIDS patients and their affected children and has worked domestically and internationally (e.g., China, sub-Saharan Africa) to improve treatment outcomes for HIV-positive parents and minimize collateral negative mental health effects on children impacted by HIV/AIDS in the family unit.  

Dr. Li earned his BS in Computational mathematics from Nanjing University, Nanjing, China; his PhD in Educational Psychology (Applied Statistics, Experimental Design, Measurement,
and Computer Application)from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; and a Certificate in  Leadership and Management in Health Care Series from the Oakland University School of Business Administration, Rochester, Michigan.
