Dr. Cardinal’s prior teaching and research experience includes Professor of Strategic Management at C. T. Bauer College of Business, University of Houston, 2010-2016; faculty positions at University of North Carolina, Duke University, Southern Methodist University, and Tulane University where she also served as Director of the Burkenroad Institute with responsibility for Business and Society annual symposia. An award-winning teacher of managing innovation and technology, strategic management, and sustainable development (social and environmental entrepreneurship), while at Tulane she won teaching awards in the professional and full-time MBA programs for the strategic management core and managing innovation and technology elective courses.

She has published articles in the Academy of Management Annals, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and the Journal of Accounting and Economics; and in 2006, she won the Michael H. Mescon Best Empirical Paper Award from the Entrepreneurship Division at the Academy of Management (with M. Fern and H. O'Neill). Her book, Organizational Control (with S. Sitkin and K. Bijlsma-Frankema), was published by Cambridge University Press in 2010.

As a consultant, executive educator, and invited keynote speaker for industry groups, her clients and business advising partners have included Sara Lee, Xerox PARC, Rockwell, Reichold Chemicals, Human Systems Innovators, Inc., and the United States Postal Service. She also co-developed a CD-ROM product "Career Paths in Management" with Convergence Multimedia (distributed by Prentice-Hall) that won the NewMedia Gold Award and Comdex Education Award for new products in 1996.

Dr. Cardinal sits on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management. She has served or serves on editorial boards of the top journals in management, served as an Associate Editor of the Academy of Management Annals, and sat on the Board of Directors of the Strategic Management Society.
