Dr. Anand Mehta

Endowed Chair in Proteomic Biomarkers

Dr. Anand Mehta’s research in proteomics focuses on identifying specific glycoprotein and carbohydrate biomarkers associated with the development and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Dr. Mehta is among the nation’s leading experts on the role of protein linked carbohydrates in the development of cancer and is considered a leader in the field of biomarker discovery and development.

Dr. Mehta in an expert in the analysis of protein-linked carbohydrates, glycoproteomics and biomarker discovery and development. Dr. Mehta is also an expert in the field of hepatocellular carcinoma and viral hepatitis. He has extensive translational center research experience and involvement in working with start-ups. Many of Dr. Mehta’s biomarkers are currently in commercial development in the USA and some are already available clinically in different parts of the world.

In addition to his SmartState Endowed Chair appointment, Dr. Mehta is a professor in the MUSC Department of Cell and Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and is working with scientists at MUSC’s Hollings Cancer Center.  Dr. Mehta has significant funding from the National Institutes of Health for his liver cancer research. His research could result in commercialized biomarker tests for a variety of medical fields, including new diagnostic tests that define how well cancer treatments are working.
