Dr. Adams' research is in the field of clinical neurology, with a focus on preventing strokes and on developing new ways to deliver stroke care to patients.
Dr. Adams is the founder of the REACH Stroke Network, a statewide program that connects small and rural hospitals with neuroscience stroke specialists at MUSC via the Internet to provide round-the-clock stroke care, and in the process, save the lives and quality of life of stroke victims. With more than ten partner hospitals across the state, the REACH Stroke Network has doubled access to expert stroke care in South Carolina.
To support his mission of increasing access to expert stroke care, Dr. Adams helped develop the company REACH Call, Inc. REACH Call provides system equipment, software, and decision support for urgent specialist consultations. He also founded South Carolina Science Solutions, LLC, a company that is focused on developing technology intended to innovate medical encounters.
Working with the American Stroke Association, Dr. Adams is also spearheading a program to help hospitals obtain designation as Joint Commission certified stroke centers. The certification is designed to better prepare hospitals to provide comprehensive stroke treatment.
Prior to MUSC, Dr. Adams was at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, where he was the Presidential Distinguished Chair and Regents Professor of Neurology and Co-Director of the Cerebrovascular Research Program. He is past chair of the Stroke Council Leadership Committee and the American Stroke Association Stroke Advisory Committee.
